In the wake of National Banana Bread Day (in the States, we’ll take it) I’ve reflected on the role banana bread plays in the POWER story.

In 2021, I strapped 100 slices of banana bread, baked by the bunch, to me. It was the sequel to the 100 bananas dress (my interpretation of the Lady Gaga meat dress, as a born vegetarian and bananas-obsessed Chief Banana Officer).

In 2023, we embodied “the experience that keeps on giving” as described by one recipient of a ‘surprise and delight’ addition to a ‘three element’ POWER experience – the POWER banana bread recipe card.

What made the first POWER banana bread recipe, in 2023, particularly special is that it was printed on the headed paper of a (anonymous) global luxury brand.

There a few things that bring me more joy in the POWER space than a) the bunch surprising themselves in movement spaces they envisaged themselves in, sharing stories they never expected to share, and b) luxury brands who initially question ‘what’s a banana got to do with luxury’, only to discover … Everything. Because there are few things more uniting, and equalising, than a POWER banana.

My exploration of the spiritual significance of the breaking of bread, as a symbol of unity and faith, as well as a metaphor for coming together in a safe space for discussion – it couldn’t be more POWER-perfect.

I also learnt that the word companion is made up of the Latin com (together) + panis (bread); someone with whom you break bread.

This etymology was reflected back to us when we received a message from the aforementioned global luxury brand (first to receive the POWER banana bread recipe card). They told us they were delighted when Liz from Finance, surprised her colleagues by bringing her POWER banana bread into the office for those not part of the experience on the day, so they too could be part of the experience (that keeps on giving), through the breaking of the banana bread. Work com-panions – powerful.

The bunch-made banana bread dress and the POWER banana bread recipe card are two bold examples of banana bread in the POWER space.

However, if I was to choose a third it would be the collective power of every POWER banana bread I’ve heard about, or received photos of (and those I haven’t), made with the POWER bananas that go home with the bunch. They are highly personal bananas, with their words on, that become ingredients in their own banana bread, or the banana bread they make with their families and friends. They are taking the word that they felt in that moment, and sharing that energy and the POWER shift they felt, with their house and their ‘home’.

For me, it’s not only how POWER stands out from ‘events’ and other one-off experiential activations, or corporate wellbeing activities, it’s a glimpse of the future when POWER food will be on the shelves, and it will be the most nourishing banana bread there ever was.

POWER banana bread will boast the ingredients; FREE, THREADS, MAGIC (just one example of one person’s three banana words, per loaf). Alongside the eggs, flour, sugar etc. And the bananas won’t simply be ingredients. Consumers will devour this extra-nutritious banana bread – ingesting so much more, by ingesting POWER banana words.

In summary, banana bread is just one expression of our insatiable appetite to shift mindset and revolutionise mental health through the power of bananas and truly nourishing, lasting experience.
